Install carpeting on stairs to hide small gaps between the tread and stringer or riser. Cut a piece of carpeting with shears to fit the stair tread exactly. Apply a coat of carpet adhesive to the stair treads and put the carpet on the tread. Place weights on the carpet for 2 to 3 hours.
Mask first so you don't get it on the wood treads, and paint over it when done. You'll have to pull up the masking tape before the caulk dries, and then mask again for paint. Don't cheap out, and look for a caulk with good stretch. I heard good things about big stretch: Scrape off any old caulk from the gap, if necessary. If there’s any old or cracked caulk along the gap, take a utility knife or a putty knife and run the edge along it to scrape it off. Be careful not to strip or chip the paint on the walls. Continue scraping until all of the old caulk is removed. I am looking for the best method to fill gaps in stairs, between the stair tread and riser.
